Siding Repair Pittsburgh: What We Fix

Before and after: split panel beside a window replaced
A split panel beside a window, before and after

A repair is the right call when the damage is in one area and the rest of the wall is sound. We open the section, check the wrap and sheathing behind it, and replace what's damaged.

  • Panels cracked by hail, branches or a mower
  • Sections that worked loose in wind
  • Rotted wood boards and trim
  • Leaks around windows, doors and roof lines

If the damage is widespread, we'll tell you, and our siding contractor Pittsburgh PA page covers full replacements.

Damage We See Most

Freeze-Thaw Cracks

Brittle older vinyl splits in cold snaps.

Wind Damage

Panels unzip when wind catches a loose edge.

Rot at the Bottom

Boards near the ground stay damp the longest.

Leaks at Openings

Old or missing flashing lets water behind the wall.

Finding the Real Source

Corner post checked and re-secured on vinyl siding

The damaged panel is often not where the water gets in. Water runs down behind siding, so a stain under a window can start at the window head, and rot at the bottom course can start at a roof line above.

  • We start above the damage. Flashing at windows, doors and where roofs meet walls is checked first.
  • We open the wall. A few courses come off so the wrap and sheathing can be seen, not guessed at.
  • We fix the cause and the damage. Re-flashing an opening is usually a small part of the cost and the reason the repair lasts.

On hillside houses, look at the uphill side too. Soil and runoff often sit against the bottom of those walls, so siding there needs clearance above the ground.

Typical Repair Costs

Vinyl repairs typically run about $240 to $1,500, depending on the material, how many panels are involved and whether sheathing needs work. Ranges like these are for budgeting only; your quote depends on the house.

Older siding fades and some colors are discontinued, so we'll show you the closest match before we start. If an exact color isn't made anymore, a panel can come off a less visible wall and the new one goes there.

Repairs by Material

Vinyl

Damaged panels are unlocked from the course above with a zip tool, slid out and replaced with full-length pieces, so seams still overlap and shed water.

Wood

Soft boards are cut back to sound wood and replaced with matching profiles, then primed on all sides and painted. Paint that keeps peeling in one spot usually means moisture behind it, so we look there too.

Aluminum

Some older homes still have aluminum siding. Dents and loose pieces can be fixed, but matching new pieces is hard because few profiles are still made, so a hidden wall is often the donor.

Fiber cement

Cracked boards are replaced and the cut ends sealed and painted, since unpainted edges soak up water.

Repair Questions

Can you match my siding?

Usually closely. If a color is no longer made, we can move a panel from a less visible wall and put the new one there.

Repair or replace?

Damage in one area is a repair. Problems on several walls usually point to replacement.

Is it safe to wait until spring?

A small crack can wait a short time if it's taped, but open sections let rain and snowmelt behind the wall, so sooner is better.

Do repairs need a permit?

Small repairs often don't, but larger sections can. We'll check for your job.
